Can cats eat raw fish?

⚠️ Caution — conditions apply
Best avoided. Raw fish carries bacteria and parasites, and contains thiaminase — an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1 cats need.

Despite the stereotype, raw fish isn't good for cats. Beyond Salmonella and parasites, raw fish contains thiaminase, which breaks down thiamine (vitamin B1); a raw-fish habit can cause a serious deficiency with neurological signs.

Frequently asked

Can cats eat sushi or sashimi?

A stolen bite is rarely harmful, but don't offer it — raw fish carries bacteria/parasites and a regular habit risks thiamine deficiency. Cooked fish is the safe treat.

What fish is safest for cats?

Small amounts of plain cooked white fish or salmon, boneless and unseasoned. Keep it an occasional treat alongside complete cat food.
