Can cats drink milk?

⚠️ Caution — conditions apply
Usually not a good idea — most adult cats are lactose intolerant, so cow's milk commonly causes stomach upset and diarrhea.

Despite the classic image, most adult cats lack enough lactase to digest cow's milk. A saucer of milk often leads to diarrhea. It also adds empty calories. Water is the best drink for cats.

Frequently asked

Why can't cats drink milk?

Kittens digest their mother's milk, but most cats lose the lactase enzyme as adults. Without it, the lactose in cow's milk ferments in the gut and causes diarrhea.

Is any milk safe for cats?

Lactose-free 'cat milk' products are gentler as an occasional treat, but plain water is always the best choice for hydration.
