Urinary blockage in cats (FLUTD)
Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) causes painful urination, and in male cats it can progress to a complete blockage — a true emergency.
What it is
Inflammation, crystals, or stones irritate the bladder and urethra. In male cats, the narrow urethra can become fully blocked, so urine can't pass — this rapidly becomes life-threatening within 24–48 hours.
Symptoms
- ●Straining in the litter box, frequent small attempts
- ●Crying or signs of pain when urinating
- ●Blood in the urine
- ●Licking the genital area
- ●Urinating outside the litter box
🔴 When to act now
- ●A male cat straining but producing little or no urine — go to a vet NOW
- ●Vomiting, lethargy, or a hard, painful belly with these signs
Treatment & management
A blockage needs emergency treatment to relieve it (catheterisation) and stabilise the cat. Non-blocked FLUTD is managed with increased water intake, diet changes, stress reduction, and sometimes medication. Wet food and water fountains help prevent recurrence.

Why is a cat not peeing an emergency?
In male cats, a urinary blockage stops urine from leaving the body, causing toxins to build up and the bladder to over-fill — fatal within a day or two. Straining with little or no urine means go to a vet immediately.
How can I prevent urinary problems in cats?
Encourage water intake (wet food, water fountains), reduce stress, keep litter boxes clean, and feed a vet-recommended urinary diet if your cat is prone. See your vet at the first sign of straining.
