Can dogs eat ice cream?

⚠️ Caution — conditions apply
Not a good idea — many dogs are lactose intolerant, and ice cream's sugar (and possible xylitol or chocolate) make it risky.

A lick of plain vanilla won't usually harm a dog, but ice cream is high in sugar and dairy that many dogs can't digest well — and chocolate or xylitol-sweetened varieties are outright dangerous.

Frequently asked

Is a little ice cream ok for dogs?

A small lick of plain vanilla is usually harmless for a dog without dairy sensitivity, but it's not a healthy treat. Never give chocolate or 'sugar-free' (xylitol) ice cream.

What's a safer cold treat for dogs?

Try plain frozen banana slices, frozen plain yogurt in moderation, or dog-specific frozen treats — all gentler than dairy ice cream.
