Can dogs eat avocado?

⚠️ Caution — conditions apply
In small amounts the flesh is usually low-risk for dogs, but the pit is a serious choking and obstruction hazard.

Avocado flesh contains persin, which is far more toxic to birds and large animals than to dogs — most dogs tolerate small amounts of flesh. The bigger risks are the large pit (obstruction) and the fat content.

Frequently asked

Is avocado toxic to dogs?

The persin in avocado is mainly a concern for birds and livestock; dogs are relatively resistant and usually tolerate small amounts of flesh. The pit and high fat are the real hazards.

My dog swallowed an avocado pit — what now?

Call your vet. The pit can lodge in the throat or intestines and cause a blockage that may need surgery. Watch for gagging, repeated vomiting, or no bowel movements.
