Can dogs have alcohol?

Not safe — toxic
No. Dogs are far more sensitive to alcohol than people — even small amounts can cause poisoning.

Beer, wine, spirits, and foods made with alcohol are all dangerous. Dogs absorb alcohol fast and can't process it well; small dogs are at the most risk. Don't forget hidden sources like rum-soaked cake or fermenting fruit.

Frequently asked

Is a lick of beer harmful to dogs?

A single lick in a large dog is usually low-risk, but there's no safe amount worth offering. Small dogs and stronger drinks escalate quickly — call your vet if more than a lick was taken.

What about food cooked with wine?

Most alcohol cooks off in long simmering, but desserts and sauces with added spirits can retain enough to matter. Keep boozy foods away from pets.
