How many calories does a cat need per day?
Start from RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75, then multiply by a cat factor (about 1.2 for a neutered adult). Adjust to body condition — many indoor cats need less.
Why do cats need fewer calories than dogs?
Cats are smaller and typically less active than working dogs, so their maintenance factors are lower (≈1.2 neutered vs ≈1.6 in dogs).
