Dogs can't tell us when something's wrong, so they rely on us to notice. Most changes are minor — but a few are red flags. Here are seven signs worth paying attention to, and what each usually means.
1. Not eating
Skipping one meal is common. Refusing food for more than a day, or alongside other symptoms, deserves a vet check.
2. Repeated vomiting
One vomit in a playful dog is often fine. Repeated vomiting, blood, or a bloated belly is urgent.
3. Lethargy
A normally bouncy dog that won't get up, or seems weak, should be assessed — especially with pale gums.
4. Trouble breathing
Labored breathing, or blue/pale gums, is always an emergency. Don't wait.
5. Straining or no urine
Difficulty urinating can signal a blockage or infection — see a vet promptly.
6. Sudden limping
A dog that won't bear weight, or shows obvious pain, needs prompt care.
7. Collapse or seizures
Any collapse, fainting, or seizure is an emergency — go to a clinic immediately.
