How to Tell If Your Pet Is in Pain

June 6, 2026 · 4 min read

Animals instinctively mask pain, so the signs are often subtle. Knowing what to look for helps you act before things get worse.

Behavioral signs

Hiding, reduced activity, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, irritability, restlessness, or changes in sleep and appetite.

Physical signs

Limping, a hunched posture, guarding part of the body, panting at rest, trembling, or excessive licking of one spot.

Species notes

Cats often just go quiet and hide. Rabbits and exotics can crash quickly — subtle changes are urgent. Birds fluff up and get still.

If you think your pet is in pain, don't give human painkillers — many are toxic. Check with a vet, and use our triage to gauge urgency.
